The Department of Applied Cultural Studies conducts academic research on the history of civilization achievements, in particular in literature and art, of the English-, French-, German-, Russian- and Spanish-speaking countries. Since the 2007/2008 academic year, the main focus of research has been the criticism of literary translation as a part of literary and cultural studies since it is related both to the issues of comparative literature and to the perception of a literary work.
In line with the academic interests of the Department’s staff, the aim of the research will be a presentation of linguistic and cultural factors influencing literary translation. Such translations frequently begin, or even introduce, new literary directions and techniques, and contribute to new ideologies and philosophical thought. Translation introduces to Polish literature, just as Polish translations to other literatures, foreign “represented worlds” and confronts Polish readers with foreign cultures and often distinct systems of values.
